  Once a site-level strategy for BNG has been determined, our Nature Recovery Consultants and Landscape Architects will work to turn the concept into a realistic design. This will be illustrated on a Site Masterplan supported by a 30-Yr Habitat Management & Monitoring Plan (HMMP) which details all of the capital, maintenance & monitoring actions required to achieve the intended BNG targets, and further supported by a detailed budget calculator modelling all costs throughout the lifespan of the project. Biodiversity Net Gain by Maydencroft Limited

Biodiversity Net Gain (BNG) is the principle of ensuring that all development results in an increase in biodiversity, through the enhancement and creation of habitats and ecological features.

The Environment Act 2021 requires most developments to deliver a minimum of 10% gain in biodiversity units, as measured using Natural England’s Biodiversity Metric. All on and offsite habitats will need to be secured, monitored and maintained for a period of at least 30 years.

Biodiversity Net Gain
The Environment Act 2021 introduced a legal obligation for Local Authorities to seek the delivery of Biodiversity Net Gain (BNG) in determining planning applications. This requirement means developers must ensure habitats for wildlife are enhanced, with a minimum 10% increase in value compared with the pre-development baseline. BNG is distinguished from other forms of ecological compensation by the requirement for providing measurable outcomes. Losses from development and gains from an 'offset' are calculated using a biodiversity metric, which quantifies habitats against fixed units of biodiversity.

On any given site, the baseline units are calculated initially. Net gain results from increased Biodiversity Units from the baseline value once the incurred habitat loss and subsequent offset have been considered.The net gain (number of units gained) is calculated as a percentage. Biodiversity offsets can be on-site and off-site and involve the creation, enhancement or accelerated succession of habitats. The amount of biodiversity units for an offset must exceed the amount of Biodiversity Units lost due to development. BNG also allows landowners to implement a habitat enhancement scheme and creation on their land that can generate a tradeable surplus of BNG units. This is known as creating a habitat bank.
